Detaills Lab Pisa Opening

A new laboratory of ideas and discussion on Artificial Intelligence and society is born in Pisa at Via San Martino 3—a physical space where people can engage, experiment, and understand the future of technological innovation. The Detaills Living Lab—inaugurated on February 13—opens its doors to anyone interested in actively participating in this reflection, fostering new shared perspectives among academia, industry, and civil society.

The Detaills Living Lab was established by the Business Engineering for Data Science (B4DS) research group from the Department of Energy, Systems, Territory, and Construction Engineering (DESTEC) at the University of Pisa, as part of the Erasmus+ Detaills project for university cooperation.

The goal is to create a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment where research on Artificial Intelligence intersects with its social, economic, and ethical implications.
“We are a group of researchers working in different areas of Artificial Intelligence and technology,” explains Filippo Chiarello, researcher at DESTEC and director of the lab. “For us, having access to a space like this represents a unique opportunity: being immersed in an ecosystem of ideas, innovations, and stimulating discussions.”

Technology has always impacted society, and today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is redefining organizational and social dynamics in unprecedented ways. The Detaills Living Lab, therefore, offers a series of events designed to foster open and interdisciplinary dialogue, with readings and debates exploring the various aspects of these changes.
“Through our activities, we aim to deepen key AI-related topics not only in academic settings but also to have a significant impact on the local community in Pisa,” says Vito Giordano, researcher at DESTEC and deputy director of the lab.
“Our goal is to make the lab a reference point for anyone interested in exploring the role of technology in society and contributing to the development of responsible innovation.”

Upcoming Events

The reflection will kick off with the seminar series “Programming, Designing, and Thinking,” starting on Thursday, February 27, at 5:00 PM at the lab in Via San Martino 3. The first talk will feature Daniela Tafani, researcher at the Department of Political Science at the University of Pisa, who will discuss “What is AI Ethics?”

The Detaills Living Lab is not just a space for research and experimentation but also a meeting place where people with different skills and interests can connect, collaborate, and generate new ideas through interdisciplinary dialogue. The literature on AI and society provides valuable critical tools to interpret the present and shape the future of technology. This will be explored in the reading series “Artificial Intelligence and Society – Rethinking Tomorrow,” starting on Wednesday, March 5, at 6:00 PM, with the session “Technology and Gender.” In this event, Diana Domenichini, PhD candidate in the National PhD Program in AI for Society, will discuss Laura Tripaldi’s book Gender Tech.

Between March and April, the “AIdeando” series of meetings will also begin, hosted by Chiara Lelli (PhD Candidate), aimed at creating a network of young researchers from various fields, encouraging exchange and collaboration. The value of collaboration is central to the Detaills Living Lab.

“Each of us has a fundamental role: informing ourselves, engaging in discussions, and contributing to building responsible AI is everyone’s responsibility. To tackle this challenge, a constructive debate is essential—one that brings together experts from both academia and industry to imagine new, innovative, and virtuous approaches,” concludes Irene Spada, researcher at DESTEC and head of the lab’s Advisory Board.
