NOVEL APPROACHES TO COMPOSITE INDICATOR: Data-driven perspectives

Department of Operational Research and Statistics, Faculty of Organizational Sciences, University of Belgrade (Serbia)

This seminar explores novel data-driven approaches to the creation and evaluation of Composite Indicators (CIs) — indexes that combine multiple measures into a single, meaningful value.

Based on the OECD framework, the talk will address how to select indicators and manage essential steps such as normalization, weighting, and aggregation, ensuring that CIs remain both robust and easy to interpret for policymakers and the public.

Professor Maričić will show how Operations Research (OR) and statistical methods can enhance the OECD process, introducing two innovative techniques:

* Enhanced Scatter Search – Composite Indicator Based on I-Distance (eSS-CIDI)

* Bootstrap – I-distance – Benefit-of-the-Doubt (B-ID-BoD)

The seminar will conclude with a discussion on current challenges and future directions for improving composite indicators through OR and data-driven methods.
